Recycling & Disposal
Our roles as a company
As a member of the national Distributor Take-back Scheme (DTS), Big Bathroom Shop is committed to providing customers who are purchasing new electrical items with the opportunity to recycle their unwanted electric goods free of charge.
In addition to Big Bathroom Shop's support of WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) recycling, our company is also working to reduce its carbon footprint and last year invested in solar PV panels which are used to power our head office and warehouse facilities in Burnley.
Recycling your old electricals is easy
Recycle your electrical and electronic devices free at your local recycling centre. To find your nearest centre, visit My Waste and type in your postcode.
Why is it important to recycle?
Many electrical and non-electrical items can either be repaired or recycled which helps save natural resources and better the environment.
Electrical equipment which is not recycled ends up in landfill, where hazardous substances can leak out, resulting in the contamination of water and soil. This can be harmful to wildlife and human health.
What is WEEE?
The Waste Electrical or Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive requires countries to maximise separate collection and environmentally friendly processing of these items.
How are we helping?
In the UK, distributors including retailers must provide a system which allows all customers buying new electrical equipment the opportunity to recycle their old items free of charge. As a responsible retailer, we have met the requirements placed on us by financially supporting the national network of WEEE recycling centres established by local authorities. This is achieved through membership of the national Distributor Take-back scheme (DTS).
To find more information on WEEE recycling and to locate your nearest recycling centre please visit the My Waste website.
How do I know which electrical items to recycle?
As a reminder to recycle your electrical items, applicable goods now come with the following label.

Please do not dispose of any electrical equipment including those marked with this symbol in your bin.
Recycling your old electricals
You can recycle your old electrical radiator free of charge at your local household waste recycling centre (HWRC). To find your nearest centre, visit the My Waste website and type in your postcode.
Recycling your old radiators
You can also recycle non-electric radiators. Once disconnected, tip out the radiator to remove water and make it as light as possible to transport. Your local council can confirm whether your nearest HWRC will accept the radiator. Alternatively, it can be traded at a scrap metal yard or even resold online if it is in perfect working order.
Our role as a company

Republic of Ireland WEEE & Battery Regulations
Irish Battery Recycling
As part of our commitment to ensure batteries are disposed of responsibly after use, the following free of charge option is available. Waste batteries can be returned free of charge to a local authority facility or to our authorised representatives’ premises at Leaf Environmental Ltd., Unit 10 Sunshine Industrial Estate, Crumlin Road, Dublin 12, Ireland D12 FT89, provided the batteries are the equivalent type sold by us.
We take recycling of batteries seriously. Some household batteries contain chemicals like lead, mercury or cadmium. If batteries are disposed of in your normal waste bin, they are likely to end up in landfill. When the batteries are put into landfill they start to breakdown and can leak some of the chemicals into the ground. This can cause soil and water pollution, which may lead to health risks. Recycling avoids this and can also recover some of the raw materials used for making batteries. These can be used to make other products. The result of recycling means we can save some of the planet’s resources by reducing the need to mine new materials.
Irish WEEE Recycling
Customers wishing to dispose of B2C waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) when it reaches the end of its life, can do so for free of charge on a one-for-one, like for like basis by informing customer services when ordering a new product. Big Bathroom Shop will also notify you 24 hours in advance of delivery. If the end-of-life product is not available for collection when the new product is delivered, we will arrange for it to be collected within 15 days of delivery of your new product.
Big Bathroom Shop is committed to meeting the requirements of the European Union (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) Regulations 2014. These Regulations require producers of electrical and electronic equipment to finance the takeback of WEEE resulting from products that we place on the Irish market. This helps us to ensure that WEEE is reused or recycled safely. In line with that commitment, we will take back WEEE from you.
Returned WEEE is sent to an authorised treatment facility where it is treated and disposed of in an environmentally sound way. Alternatively, you can take the item to our authorised representatives’ premises at Leaf Environmental Ltd., Unit 10 Sunshine Industrial Estate, Crumlin Road, Dublin 12, Ireland D12 FT89. You may also take B2C WEEE items to your local authority civic amenity facility who take back B2C WEEE free of charge.
You have a role to play in ensuring that WEEE is reused and recycled safely. You should not dispose of it in your bin. The crossed out wheeled bin symbol on the product reminds users not to dispose of WEEE in the bin. You should ensure that the WEEE is collected separately and sent for proper treatment. WEEE contains hazardous substances and if not managed and treated safely it can cause pollution and damage human health.
Price of electrical items includes a contribution to recycling costs.
All WEEE and waste batteries must be recycled and should not be placed in your waste disposal or recycling bins.
